Yes, I'm sure you're all quite tired of all the screamo posts lately, but since my previous post was about a Killie/Heaven in Her Arms split and I had never even posted a full Killie album before, I figured that it would be a good time to post my favorite album by Killie. Unfortunately, like practically everything else they've done it is now out of print (limited to 1,000 copies on singer Yoshi's own Oto Records).

Anyways, Killie's brand of screamo is quite chaotic and they are possibly one of the more 'out there' groups when it comes to screamo. Highly atonal vocals, lots of dissonance, unconventional song structure, and plenty of spoken word interludes. I think for even those who aren't fans of screamo, Killie may appeal to them due to their unique and almost avant-garde approach to their sound.

1. Heaven in Her Arms- Rokugatsu
2. Killie- Mudai

In 2008, Japanese screamo pioneers, Heaven in Her Arms and Killie released a split 3". Now the two groups releasing a split together alone is worth an honorable mention, but when the split is actually a cover album, that's when things get even more interesting.

On Heaven in Her Arms' side of this CD, we get a song entitled 'Rokugatsu' which is a cover of two songs, 'The Old World is Behind Us' and 'The Jailors Speak of Freedom' by Massachusetts group, Ampere.

On Killie's side, a song entitled 'Mudai' appears, which is actually a cover of 'Guigno' by Italian group, La Quiete.

While Killie's cover is quite faithful to the original, Heaven in Her Arms' trails off into something almost unrecognizable (in a good way); much more ambiance and heavy on spoken word, Heaven in Her Arms certainly puts a unique twist on their cover, although not to discredit Killie's cover, they are both excellent in their own right.

As I'm sure most of you are interested in hearing the original versions of these songs as well, here are the Ampere and La Quiete albums which feature the previously mentioned songs.

Most of modern day screamo (the good screamo, at least) still has this very prevalent vibe of punk rock ethics which is obviously seen in the connection and (what I'm sure is) respect for each others music, which is very much shown in this cover album. To have two Japanese groups get together and recognize the works of artists in both the United States and Italy is a truly amazing thing, I believe. All these groups are necessary listening for screamo fans and deserve your attention and support!

Even japanese hardcore die-hard fans don't know much about Mad Conflux. All we know is that they were from Yokosuka and played from 1985 to 1991, the year vocalist Kazuma died in a car accident (or was it an overdose? or maybe one induced the other?).

Anyway, Mad Conflux never had a proper release of their own and i believe that's what prevented them to achieve post-mortem fame and legendary status.

This CD compiles everything they recorded for various compilations (Hang The Sucker, Get Back The Discharged Arrow, Triple Cross Counter Tour...), a tape-only release and a split flexi with Janky. It also has two live sets with decent sound quality.
So, yeah, you get to hear the same songs a bunch of times and it gets a bit boring in the end.

Mad Conflux was one of the first japanese hardcore band to include elements obviously borrowed to american bands in their sound.
Without them and a few others (SIC, Corruption Of Peace... both had 'gaijins' in their line-up), japanese bands would maybe still be playing the old boring traditionnal style known as Japcore. Long mid-tempo songs with too many guitar solos. And that would be awful for everyone.

Just for that reason, Mad Conflux deserves a bit of your attention if you're slightly interested in japanese hardcore-punk.

Or you can just download this to get a bunch of short and angry songs, some of them having funny titles in engrish.

DECIDE ON A SINGLE SHOUT!

sora are another relatively unknown screamo group from Japan. Lead vocalist/guitarist Kenta Uchida also plays in the group Killie, but sora's music dwells little on the chaotic, borderline avant-garde leanings of Killie. Instead, sora produces a much more guitar-based, melodic brand of screamo.

More Toromi madness for all of you. A LOT of Toromi madness.

I feel a bit bad posting all these Toromi albums, but it's pretty much near impossible for one to acquire her albums in the states. Apparently she isn't that well known in Japan either.

Toromi will fuck you up

If you haven't seen my previous post about Toromi, she's a mysterious denpa goddess that I can't even begin to explain properly in words, so I'll link you to this amazing denpa blog that sheds some light on who she is. Some very excellent information on an otherwise unknown artist.

Since a large percentage of posts by me have been purely Japanese music, I figured this would be a nice change of pace.

Binary Star was a short-lived hip-hop duo formed in 1998. One half One Be Lo, and the other half Senim Silla. They met each other in Hiawatha Correctional Facility where One Be Lo devoted his time to extensively researching the music industry, where in his words, he learned "how to hustle legally." They debuted with the album 'Waterworld' on Terrorist Records in 1999 on a budget of $500, which was followed with a tour across Michigan (due to the fact that both were still on parole and could not leave the state). Switching over to Subterraneous Records, they released this record, 'Masters of the Universe,' which was essentially a remixed version of 'Waterworld,' yet it garnered much more attention than it's predecessor. Due to creative and personal differences the group was no more by 2000.

I can't say that my knowledge on hip-hop is the best, but I'm familiar with some of the 'classics,' and this is definitely one of them. Masters of the Universe is far by one of the most profound and intelligent hip-hop records I have come across. The production being comparable to Wu-Tang Clan's '36 Chambers' in it's gritty and raw approach with the lyrical skill akin to Mos Def & Talib Kweli's 'Black Star' album in it's self-awareness (as well as in it's critique of the fellow hip-hop community) and slightly philosophical undertones, even at 24 tracks there is no filler, each song is unique in it's own right. This is obviously an album that was made putting in every drop of one's own sweat and tears.

For those who long to embrace all that is good in hip-hop, or for those who's faith need be restored, Masters of the Universe is one of the finest hip-hop records ever made.

The Genbaku Onanies (=The Atomic Masturbations) was one of the most important first-wave punk band coming from Nagoya at the beginning of the 80's. Well, there was also The Star Club but i think they suck so forget them.

"Nuclear Cowboy" is the first LP released by The Genbaku Onnanies in 1985 on the almighty Alchemy Records label (managed by Hijokaidan's leader Jojo). Musically, this is pretty simple mid-tempo punk-rock.
It might seems like there's nothing to write home about after a few listens but the songs all have great hooks and will certainly please the amateurs of this period and sound.
Fans of The Stalin should take notice.

But yeah, i would have done just as well without a Ramones cover.
Whatever.

The Genbaku Onanies reformed a few years ago and share the stage with Gauze, Systematic Death and other "legendary japcore bands". "Nuclear Cowboy" is considered a classic punk record in Japan but, strangely enough, it doesn't seem like it has already been uploaded on the internet. So i'm pleased to share it with you for my first post on Female Trouble.

useless trivia :
- the first three records from the Genbaku Onanies have been released on particular dates : april 29th 1984 (Emperor Hirohito's birthday), december 8th 1984 (USA/Japan official war declaration anniversary) and august 8th 1985 (exactly 40 years after Hiroshima nuclear bombing).
-The Genbaku Onanies shared some members with The Star Club.
-Hijokaidan and The Genbaku Onanies played a few shows together under the name Genbakukaidan).

Megane-kun, a french guy who likes to drink cold.

Obviously I have nothing to do on this day but sit around at home and browse the internet, ranting to the mere 8 followers that Female Trouble has at the moment (I'm kind of sick anyways, so goes my excuse), but the one redeeming thing about today is that Perfume has announced a new single slated for April. Essentially that means in the next few months we're going to be getting three new Nakata related releases (Player, Liar Game 2, and the currently untitled Perfume single).

To continue on with Perfume-related news (since I don't nearly mention them as much as I'd want to on here [probably because you can find most information from Perfume City or Contemode Blog anyways, but today I'll make an exception])

Today is A-Chan's 21st Birthday!

(Taken from Perfume City)

Happy Birthday to Perfume's youngest member, A-Chan! I hope you have a wonderful day. All Perfume's members are 21 now, isn't that surreal? My motto has always been that it's okay to obsesses over girl groups, as long as they're older than you :3

And because it's Valentines Day here in the states, I thought this would be a fitting song to post. If you're a Perfume fan and you haven't heard it, well... you need to! This song is an official remix by Nakata and was released only on 7", limited to 100 copies by a mail-in contest by 'Remix' magazine.

It's enough of a pain in the ass that most of the noise I wish to purchase is in severely limited copies, but even my favorite mainstream pop group? And only at 100 copies it's most likely the rarest Perfume item out there. I'm sure even this guy doesn't have it

Puts my collection to shame

I'm gonna go eat a burrito, play Paper Mario and study Japanese. What a day.

As the title implies, this Hijokaidan record consists of tracks solely by husband/wife noise team, Jojo and Junko (I wish I had a girlfriend like Junko....). The first two tracks are taken from the now out of print Alchemy release, 'No Paris/No Harm,' and the third is taken from a live compilation entitled 'No Music Festival.' For fans of Junko's otherworldly, chaotic screaming, this is the record you must listen to. Her vocals are really the focal point on here, and because of the minimal instrumentation on this record, you're able to make much more clear sense of Jojo's guitar playing as well. A great record for both new and veteran fans of Hijokaidan's work.

There are few surprises with Sweet Vacation, just the name itself is a dead giveaway of what you should expect from them musically. However, 'pop save the world!!' is one of those albums that is so coated in sugar that you can't help but go for a taste. While there isn't anything too new here as far as techno-pop goes, the songs are quite infectious and just plain adorable. A very summery and nostalgic vibe to this record Sweet Vacation is much more laid back than their contemporaries; less grinding and more dancing. The band is still fairly in their infancy, and this is only their debut full-length, so they are definitely one to keep an eye out for in the future. Also, singer May is probably the biggest piece of eye-candy since Nocchi (plus she's only 20 days older than me, ahhhh!) And that's saying a damn lot.

I miss you ~Yume de aetara~:

Bananafish was a magazine based in San Francisco by Seymour Glass. Striving for both the absurd and the avant-garde it gained quite a nice underground following. Perhaps one of the most imporant things concering this magazine was how it exposed otherwise unattainable music to the Americas. This compilation in particular features the works of noise groups such as C.C.C.C. (the track, Female Trouble, which this blog is named after) and Masonna. But not to disregard the other works on this compilation, they are all compelling and interesting and are sure to appeal to anyone who has an interest in the experimental.

Ah, nostalgia. Listening to this almost makes me want to weep. This is a compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog songs that came with select copies of Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast. It came in a nice blue box along with a collector's coin and a small booklet detailing the history of Sonic along with a nice collection of pictures. But that isn't important to you, now is it? What is important is that this encompasses all of the Sonic music till Sonic Adventure 2. You get to hear the genius of composer Masato Nakamura at work, that is, until you get about 15 songs deep and then all you get are really cheesy rock songs (Dreamcast-era Sonic, obviously).

My favorite Sonic game is tied between the original, and Sonic and Knuckles. To be honest though, I don't think I've ever beaten a Sega Sonic game in my life. Platformers were hardasfuq back in the day, breh. What's your favorite Sonic game?

Suicide Circle is a Japanese film by Sion Sono which has gained quite a cult following here in the United States probably due to the fact that it was released alongside 'Moonchild' in a 3 DVD set by TLA and Gackt loving weeaboos everywhere became aware of it's existence. Either way, Suicide Circle is an amazing film despite it's general popularity among people who are just familiar with only the surface of Japanese cinema. Not only did this film present the work of Sion Sono to a wider audience, but most likely the music of Haruko Momoi as well, who's song 'Mail Me' is covered by the band Dessert in the film.

If you enjoyed the music within the film, there is no doubt you'll enjoy the soundtrack. It's essentially all the same music, but unedited. For those who haven't seen the film, if you're into any obscure Japanese rock or pop-groups that feature prepubescent girls in them, then this is for you too.
